Read the handout on Math and Measurement in the Garden: Body, Spaces and Technology. Try the exercise on calibrating your own body and record your results. You can do this individually, or with a friend or family member, or with students in your class!
Then use these ancient, body-based ways of measuring to measure something indoors (for example, to make a drawing of your classroom or kitchen) and/or something outdoors (for example, a garden bed or a playground).
Find one extension that connects these measurements to something practical. For example, if you have a seed packet left from last spring's garden planting, how can you tell how many packets of, say, squash seeds you will need to fill a garden bed, with the right spacing? Or if you are considering getting a new table for your classroom or kitchen, how will it fit?
